1920's QUARTERMAINS CAMP

Quartermains is deep down in a lush valley, nestled between two huge hills. Even the safari jeeps struggle to get up and down the steep incline approach.  Sleeping  in 1920 style tents, no electricity, living in the style of the Early Settlers. Magic

The tents are great fun and we do have the luxury of a bucket shower and flushing loo.   There is a comfy boma and lounge area under a thatch canopy.

Quartermains is between Amakhala and Shamwiri reserves and the Rangers go into both. Shamwiri is owned by a Dubai consortium so the roads are better than the privately owned Amakhala which was a relief as we feel we have been in a tumble dryer for the last ten days.  Amakhala held our hearts tho.

Fabulous lion sighting. Two females and a big male had caught a hartebeast. It's half carcus left on the ground for next day's dinner. Distended stomachs and lying in the sun complete. Wonderful to spend time with them.

The weather had cooled down a bit which was fortunate being in tents.  Then the rain came!! Still going out on game drives we saw elephants enjoying a bath in red sand.  It was flying everywhere & they were covered in it & became red Ellie's. Wonderful fun.  Then a pod of hippos appeared in the river. So lucky as we've seen most animals now

Finally returned to camp a bit wet & cold but happy. having slid and rolled around for four hours.  A welcoming big fire, and braii greeted us with an old gramophone playing old tunes completed the picture.

What a great experience, sort of living the life of the Early Settlers.
How did they do it.  Taking wagons through this terrain, coping with extreme weather in their thick clothes, finding food and avoiding wild animals.

How brave and courageous
